When we bought the house, it was advertised as having 5 bedrooms... it doesn't have 5 bedrooms. When the house was built, the master bedroom had an en suite but when the previous family welcomed baby no 5, they needed an additional bedroom. They decided to knock out the en suite, pinch more room from the master bedroom and in theory create a 5th bedroom. It wasn't big enough to be classed as a bedroom and it was literally a 'Nursery'. We knew we'd want to be changing that ASAP as we have no need for a nursery and also we didn't like how small the main bathroom for the house was.
Here's a floor plan of the house (when we bought it)... please note that the window in bedroom 5 isn't as big as its portrayed on here!
As you can see, the '5th Bedroom' is absolutely tiny! As is the bathroom if you ask me. We toyed with the idea of putting in an en suite again (but then having to live with a small bathroom) or whether we just made the bathroom bigger. Obviously at the minute, there is only the two of us living in the house so having one bathroom is no problem at all. We do have a downstairs loo which is useful though!
We asked a few people (mainly families) what their opinions were on having an en suite or whether it's been an issue once there's little ones in the house and they all honestly said that as long as you have more than one toilet, there's no massive issue only having one main bathroom. It helped us make up our minds that we were just going to extend the main bathroom and have no en suite.
Here is our current tiny bathroom!
Here is a floor plan of what the house will look like once we've completed the bathroom and bedroom work
You can now see that the window that was in bedroom 5 isn't really that big as it would spread across two rooms!
So we've taken the wall (that was in bedroom 2) back to create the new boundary for the bathroom and we've also removed the bathroom wall to open it up into the 'Nursery' (bedroom 5).
This will make what was advertised as 'Bedroom 2' back into the master bedroom and it will be a really good size! It also means that we can have a separate walk in shower in the main bathroom which I'm excited about.
This is our progress so far...
This was the original stud wall for the 'Nursery'
We then started to knock through the bathroom wall to open it up
Next up came the floorboards!
From standing in the bath, all of the bathroom and nursery into the master bedroom was open
The new stud wall has been put up and it is being plaster boarded as I type!
My OH has done all of this work on his own! Granted it's taking longer than it normally would but the only thing we've had to pay for is the new timer for the stud wall so we're definitely saving lots of £££.
I can't wait to update you all on what happens next, I think it may be getting the master bedroom sorted out and then perhaps installing the new bathroom after Christmas.
Thanks for reading!
